Sandwiches for the Soul was founded by Sam Carey, a high school senior from New Jersey, who combined his passion for cooking with a desire to address the hunger and homelessness he has witnessed firsthand in his community. In Jersey City, food insecurity is a pressing issue, with roughly 1 in 8 residents struggling to access enough food, and countywide, about 1 in 12 Hudson County families remain food insecure. Local shelters are often overwhelmed, as homelessness in Hudson County has been rising in recent years, reflecting a broader 24% increase in homelessness across New Jersey. Wanting to make a tangible difference, Sam chose sandwiches—a universally loved, portable, and nourishing food—as the centerpiece of his mission. He gathers donations for supplies, organizes his friends into sandwich-making assembly lines, bags the meals, and delivers them to food pantries serving underserved communities in Essex and Hudson Counties. With plans to expand into New York City and hopes to inspire more students to join his cause, Sam envisions Sandwiches for the Soul as not just a project, but a growing movement that delivers dignity, kindness, and hope—one sandwich at a time. His goal? Filling stomachs and lifting spirits!
